While some postulate that the state is undergoing a crisis in sovereignty or that formal citizenship has become irrelevant or obsolete, this dissertation argues that we are not witnessing the last act of the sovereign state or the demise of citizenship. Through an analysis of state control over citizenship, statelessness and migration, the dissertation challenges two prominent claims: 1) that the state’s authority has weakened to such an extent that global politics is now managed primarily through varying forms of global governance, and 2) that citizenship is no longer needed for rights enjoyment or protection since human rights have been decoupled from citizenship.
