As a lawyer, politician and publisher of the weekly newspaper “DIE ZEIT”, Gerd Bucerius (1906-1995) defended individual and political rights and freedom, wherever he considered them at risk. His biographer, Lord Ralf Dahrendorf, characterized Gerd Bucerius as a “true liberal, independent and free”. In all his endeavours, Gerd Bucerius never once shied away from difficult and sometimes highly contentious questions. Despising complacency, he turned his newspaper into a forum for cosmopolitan debate and controversy.
With its Bucerius Ph.D. Scholarship Program in Migration Studies, the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius strives to live up to his spirit.
